In order to understand the current situation of the Detroit automotive industry, Taiwan SET-TV News Channel news reporter Chung Peilin and photographer Lin Yungming traveled to Detroit International Auto Salon (DIAS) in order to interview Wayne County executive Robert Ficano.
Accompanying Mr. Ficano in the interview were head of the Wayne County’s program manager Olivia Deng, DIAS President Michael Wesney, DIAS Sales Vice-President Alphonse Kolis and John Gulbransen. Before the interview, DIAS President Michael Wesney introduced Mr. Ficano, who then extended a warm welcome towards the viewers of Taiwan SET-TV News Channel. Reporter Chung Peilin asked Mr. Ficano about the current view that the automotive industry has gone bankrupt in the Detroit economy. Mr. Ficano replied that the biggest causes and problems of the bankruptcy do not stem from the car companies themselves, but from the losses of the suppliers and other areas. Currently, the government is helping personnel gain re-employment as well as helping enterprises to gradually transition to other domains. He said that although the reconstruction of Detroit’s economy will be a painful process, the city has a very strong technology base, engaged and knowledgeable citizens in automotive technology, and strong values.
Reporter Chung Peilin then asked Mr. Ficano about his personal feelings about the decline in the Detroit automotive industry. Mr. Ficano sincerely replied that the current situation is that China maintains the only growth in the market as automotive sales volume decreases in many places around the world. Clearly, this is not an optimistic phenomenon. However, he then reviews his own growth history, starting with a grandfather working at Ford Motor Company. This provided him with substantial opportunities for his success, such as being the first in his family to go to college. He has personally experienced a nourishing automotive industry and the benefits coming with that so he hopes to change the current situation.
When reporter Chung Peilin asked Mr. Ficano as to the reasons behind Chrysler’s declared bankruptcy, he replied that although he’s not an expert in this field. However, in general, he explained that as Chrysler and Daimler have cooperated for a long period of time, Daimler’s inability to transition technologically added to the current situation. Also, the questions surrounding the financial situation of the banks also contributed to putting Chrysler in a difficult position.
